Many customers ask: “Can a gobo projector work properly if it has to shine through glass?”
The short answer is yes — but the result depends almost entirely on two factors: the type of glass you use, and how well the pattern colors match the projection surface.

If you’ve ever tried to project a logo or advertising light through glass and ended up with a dim, blurry, or almost invisible image — you’re not alone. The good news is that with the right glass selection and a few simple adjustments, you can get sharp, vibrant, and highly professional results.
This article is based on real testing and hands-on experience from Shenzhen Aladdin Lighting Technology Co., Ltd. — a trusted gobo projector manufacturer and logo projector factory in China.
Why does glass kill some projections — but make others look great?
The key lies in how different glass types interact with light.
1. Clear / Transparent Glass — Not Recommended
If you shine a projection lamp through untreated clear glass, most of the light passes straight through. Very little is reflected back to the viewer. As a result:
- The image looks extremely faint
- Details are hard to see from either side of the glass
- Complex patterns or logos become almost invisible
👉 Verdict: Not suitable for logo projection or advertising projector use.
2. Frosted / Etched Glass — Highly Recommended
Frosted glass has a diffused surface that scatters light just enough to capture and hold the projected image. In our tests:
- The image is sharp and vivid when viewed from the inner side
- Colors stay rich and accurate
- Even fine text or detailed gobo logos remain clearly readable
The only trade-off: when viewed from the outer side, the image looks noticeably lighter. However, for most commercial applications (storefronts, indoor signage, decorative lighting), the inner-side viewing experience is what matters most.

👉 Verdict: Frosted glass is the clear winner for gobo projector outdoor or indoor use.
Best pattern colors for projecting through frosted glass
Not all colors perform equally well. Based on our internal testing at Shenzhen Aladdin, the following colors give the best clarity and contrast when a pattern light shines through frosted glass:
- Red
- Green
- Blue
- White
- Yellow
If your logo or advertising projection includes these colors, you will get much cleaner and more reliable results — especially in low-light nighttime environments, where the image looks even more three-dimensional and striking.

Installation height is not a problem
Unlike some other projection methods, height does not affect image clarity when using a proper gobo logo projector light with frosted glass. Whether you are projecting onto a low glass partition or a high glass facade — as long as the glass type is right, the image will remain stable and clear.
This makes frosted-glass projection a practical choice for:
- Office glass walls
- Retail storefront windows
- Hotel lobbies
- Shopping mall
- Conference rooms
